Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, Lahaina which was known back then as Lele meaning the “relentless sun” in Hawaiian, has now been transformed into one of Maui’s hot spots. The historic town is now scattered with dozens of art galleries and a variety of unique shops and restaurants. Lahaina was also a historic whaling village in the mid 1800’s. Up to 1,500 sailors took leave in Lahaina including Herman Melville, whom memorialized this era in his classic novel Moby Dick.
Walking down the very active Front Street you still get a feel for the old Lahaina. Visit the historic shops like the U.S. Seamen’s Hospital, Hale Paaho (Lahaina Prison), the Pioneer Inn and many other sites along the Lahaina Historic Trail. Lahaina is in fact on the National Register of Historic Places and approximately 55 acres of old Lahaina is set aside as part of the historic districts.
With Lahaina’s sunny climate and oceanfront setting also provides the perfect arena for a variety of activities and entertainment all year round. In Lahaina’s fine restaurants you are able to get a fresh taste of Hawaii’s Regional Cuisine. You are also able to eat, drink and watch the traditional dances of Polynesia at some of Maui’s best seaside luau’s such as the Old Lahaina Luau located right on Front Street. If you’re looking to learn more about the culture of Hawaii be sure to check out the award winning show Ulalena at the Maui Theatre also located on Front Street. During the winter months set sail from the Lahaina harbor on an unforgettable whale watching tour. The channel off the coast of Lahaina is one of the best places to spot a humpback whale; even these magnificent creatures cannot get enough of Lahaina.
Lahaina is a must visit while on the island of Maui with everyday full of adventure and culture.
